Wilson's or Chinese Styrax. This is a rarely offered species of  a 7-10 ft. large shrub to small tree which does well in the Deep South in filtered sun, but further north it will take full sun. It covers itself with a plethora of 3-5 flowered racemes of white pagoda-like blooms in April. One might say that this is a miniature of Styrax japonica. It is said to grow on scrubby, mountain hillsides and along stream banks at 4200-5500 ft. in the western Sichuan Province of China. It is named for Earnest Wilson, this country's foremost plant explorer at the turn of the last century, who worked extensively for the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard. This selection is easily grown on a well drained site with adequate moisture, and our 3 quart pots were covered in flowers.
